The Council of Trent

  • 1545- 1563 Council of Roman Catholics organized to refute Protestantism (founded in Italy)
  • Justified most of the Church's practices
  • Leads to some reforms within the Church

Society of Jesus (Jesuits)

  • Founded in Paris, France
  • Missionaries that spread Catholicism (convert millions in Europe and around the world)
  • Known for charitable works and education

The Inquisitions

  • Used to reinforce Catholic doctrine; investigated preists, punished heretics, etc.
  • Most famous/Brutal: The Spanish Inquisition
  • Often used torture

Eventually, the Catholic Church makes some changes
