EFFECTS OF WAR ON THE HOMEFRONT
Millions of men and women served in the armed forces, and their families and friends both
dealt with concern over their safety and sought ways to support the troops.
The civilian population faced shortages, rationing, and other disruptions to their way of life,
but never stopped supporting the nation’s war efforts.
3.
EVACUATION
When the war began in September 1939 the government knew that
large cities would be the target for German bombs and that casualties would be high.
Evacuation was introduced to move school children, teachers, mothers with children
under the age of five and disabled people out of the cities to the countryside where
there was little risk of bombing raids.
4.
RATIONING
Every man, woman and child was given a ration book for food and had to
to register with a grocery store.
Almost all foods and clothing was rationed.
Imported goods were in short supply so the government introduced
rationing to make sure everyone had fair share of what was available.
5.
WOMEN
As more and more men were 'called up' to serve in the forces, women were called upon
to take over the jobs traditionally done by men.
Women worked in the factories producing aircraft, ammunition, weapons and other goods
needed for the war effort.
The women who worked in the fields and on farms were known as Land Girls.
