EGYPT AND GREECE

THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA AND THE PARTHENON OF ATHENS

Egypt: 3500 BC - 642 AD

Greece: 7000 BCE - 146 BCE

Monumental architecture is a huge man-made building made either out of stone or earth.

Egyptian Architecture and it's Purpose:
The Pyramids of Giza: Tombs of the most prominent kings of the 4th Dynasty (Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure)
The Great Sphinx of Giza: It was a statue to guard the Pyramids of Giza and to keep the bad spirits out of them.

Greek Architecture and it's Purpose:
The Parthenon of Athens: A place of worship for the goddess Athena
Temple of Delphi: A place to ask the oracle Delphi questions
The Olympieion: A place to worship the god Zeus

The most memorable monumental architecture of Greece would have to be the Parthenon of Athens, which began construction in 449 BCE and finished in 432 BCE. How the Parthenon was built is a mystery since there were no machines back then like we have now. The whole building was constructed of 70,000 blocks of marble. It was built as a place of worship for the goddess Athena.

The most memorable monumental architecture of Egypt are the Pyramids of Giza. Like the Parthenon, how it was built is still unknown, since each block of limestone weighed 2.5 tons. The pyramid of Khufu was built in around 2550 BCE, the pyramid of Khafre in 2520 BCE, and the pyramid of Menkaure 2490 BCE. Construction took about 60 years to complete total.

Pyramids of Giza Manner:
King Khufu ordered his men to make himself a tomb while he was still alive, same as Khafre and Menkaure, so it is possible that they built them to show off. However, they were mainly built to serve a purpose: to be their tombs after they had passed.

Parthenon of Athens Manner:
Once again, there is a possibility that the Greeks built the many temples for their gods and goddesses, such as the Parthenon, to show off. Nevertheless, these buldings were mainly used as a place to worship, pray, and to offer sacrifices to the gods.

Similarities / Differences
Some similarities are that both structures were man-made, very precise, and very big (this was because
A differences is that their structures were different shapes- the pyramids obviously being square pyramids and the Parthenon being a rectangular prism with columns all around.

Why Was The Pyramids of Giza Built So Big?
It was because King Khufu wanted to be remembered and because he wanted it to be tall enough to reach the sun god, Ra.

Why Was The Parthenon Built So Big?
It was because the Greeks wanted to satisfy the goddess Athena and so that there would be enough room for the statue of her inside.
