CHAPTER 7- ANIMAL LIFE

  • ANCIENT Egypt swarmed with animals that no longer live here.
  • Many animals were drawn in hieroglyphic symbols, and some were honored as gods.
  • Lions wandered in from the dessert for water.

CHAPTER 8- HIEROGLYPHS

  • Some hieroglyphs represented an object.
  • Egyptians were writing with picture symbols called hieroglyphs as early as 3000 b.c.
  • Some hieroglyphic symbols homophones, words that sound alike but have different meanings.

CHAPTER 9- LIFE EVERLASTING

  • Egyptians believed that the dead would enjoy all their earthly comforts in the afterlife.
  • Most people in the age of 110 didn't live past their thirties.
  • The Egyptians believed that the jackal- headed god Anubis escorted each soul into the afterlife.

CHAPTER 10- MUMMIES

  • After death, the body was made into a mummy to keep it from decaying.
  • Mummification could take as long as seventy days.
  • The body was wrapped round and round with white linen strips.

CHAPTER 11- PYRAMIDS

  • To make sure they would have eternal life, pharaohs built fabulous tombs for themselves.
  • The earliest pharaohs built tombs called mastabas- low, flat- topped, mud- brick structures with slanting sides.
  • Khufu built the largest pyramid called the great pyramid, around 2600 b.c.

CHAPTER 12- HOW DID THEY BUILD THE PYRAMIDS?

  • The ancient Egyptians left only a few clues about how they built the pyramids.
  • The Greek historian Herodotus says that 100,000 men worked on the Great Pyramid in three- month shifts.
  • The blocks were probably put on runners, like sleds, and hauled up wooden or stone ramps.

CHAPTER 13- KINGDOMS UNITE AND DIVIDE.

  • The history of ancient Egypt may be divided into three major periods.
  • In time, the pharaohś power weekened, and Egypt once again broke into separate districts.
  • During this time, construction began on the temple of Amon at Karnak.

CHAPTER 14- THE NEW KINGDOM: CONQUESTS AND CONSTRUCTION.

  • To show off their power, New Kingdom pharaohs built huge temples, monuments, and statues of themselves.
  • For their tombs, New Kingdom rulers built huge necropolises, or cities of the dead.
  • So far, about sixty tombs have been found in the valley of the kings-- only a fraction of those waiting to be discovered.
