PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Sound waves are simplified to a description in terms of sinusoidal plane waves.
A wave is a trivelling disturbance and it carries energy from one place to another.
TRANSVERSE WAVES
The direction of the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction motion.
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
The direction of the disturbance is parallel to the direction of the waves motion.
Wavelength is a spatial period of the wave in the direction motion.
Amplitude is the maximum displacement of a particle from its undisturbed position.
Period is the time required for one complete cycle.
MATEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF WAVES
This equation rapresents the displacement of a particle for a wave travelling in the positive x direction with an amplitude A, frequency f and wavelenght λ.
This equation assumesse that y=0 m when x=0 m and t=0 s and aplies equally to transverse or longitudinal waves
