Electricity

Hydro And Thermal Electricity

Electricity

  • Electricity is a force caused by electric charge. It is a form of energy which we use to power machines and electrical devices
  • When the charges are not moving, electricity is called static electricity.
  • When the charges are moving they are an electric current, sometimes called 'dynamic electricity'.

Hydro electricity

  • Hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.
  • India has a number of multi-purpose projects like the Bhakra Nangal, Damodar Valley corporation, the Kopili Hydel Project etc. producing hydroelectric power.

How is hydro electricity produced?

  • A dam on a river to store water in a reservoir.
  • Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity.

Thermal Electricity

  • Thermal generation is the process of generating electricity from heat. Heat is a form of energy.
  • Heat energy that is turned into electricity can be made in many ways. It can be produced by burning fuels such as coal, oil, gas or wood.
  • There are 310 thermal power plants in India
