ELECTROCHEMISTRY

BY: MEGAN HARDY

WHAT IS ELECTROCHEMISTRY

  • Electrochemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the relations between electrical and chemical phenomena.
  • One real life example is batteries.
  • Another thing it is used for is to control corrosion.

BASIC BATTERY SETUP

  • A battery is setup by using electrochemistry and different metal wire types to conduct the electricity

HOW OXIDATION REDUCTION MAKES BATTERIES WORK

  • When the reactive components of that electrochemical cell come into contact with another one it results in the transfer of electrons.
  • There are different materials in each electrode and they want to react with one being oxidized and one being reduced.

WHAT IS CORROSION

  • Corrosion is the destruction of certain metals.
  • It helps lead-acid batteries because it helps them charge and it brings life to the positive plates in the batteries.
  • In certain metals it is considered rusting and in others it actually dematerializes the metals.

WHAT IS ELECTOLYSIS

  • Chemical decomposition produced by passing an electric current through a liquid or solution of ions.
  • You can use it to make details on metals
  • And you can also make aluminum by using electrolysis
