The plot is the arrangement of the events in the story.

5 ELEMENTS TO LOOK FOR IN A PLOT

  • The Exposition- Introduction/Beggining
  • The Rising Action- Trigger to conflict
  • The Climax- Highest point of interest/turning point
  • The Falling Action- Resolution toward conflict
  • Denouement- Final outcome of story

THEME

A central idea in a literary work.

POINT OF VIEW

The angle or perspective from which the story is told.

MAIN TYPES OF P.O.V.

  • First Person- uses "I" or "me"
  • Second Person- uses "you"
  • Third Person- uses "he" or "she"
  • Omniscient- means "all knowing" can switch characters and is free.
  • Limited Omniscient- told in 3rd person, usually the main character

OTHER TYPES OF P.O.V.

  • Innocent Eye- told through eyes of a child
  • Stream of Consciousness- feels as if the reader is inside the head of one
  • character and knows all their thoughts and reactions.
  • Objective- author tells story in third person. No comments.
  • The reader has to interpret events on their own.

SETTING

  • Place
  • Time
  • Weather conditions
  • Social conditions
  • Mood or atmosphere

CONFLICT-THE PROBLEM OR CHALLENGE

  • Man vs. man
  • Man vs. nature
  • Man vs. himself
  • Man vs. society
