HISTORY OF SODIUM

  • Sir Humphrey Davy in England in 1807 found sodium in the earths crust
  • Sodium is used for the production in titanium
  • He isolated sodium by reducing hydroxide with iron metal and a high temp
  • The name sodium comes from the English name "soda"
  • The abbreviation Na comes from the Latin word "natrium".

PROPERTIES OF SODIUM

  • Highly reactive with water
  • Malleable
  • Low melting point
  • Soft to cut
  • Burns in hair

USES OF SODIUM

  • Bonded with chloride to make table salt
  • Used in light fixtures has that orange yellow glow
  • Used in the production of titanium.

WHERE SODIUM IS FOUND

  • Is found in the earths crust
  • Also found in lakes and oceans as sodium chloride
  • You can get pure sodium for 25 cents per gram
  • Until the 18th century there was no distraction between potassium and sodium
