PROPERTIES OF ELEMENTS

2.
GROUP 1
Alkali metals have low melting and boiling points compared to other metals.
They are very soft and can be cut with a knife.
They also have a low density and will(lithium, sodium and potassium will float on water)
They have on electron on the outer shell which is loosely bound.
They react readily with nonmetals, particularly halogens.
3.
GROUP 2
Low densities
Low boiling points
Low melting points
lose two outermost electrons to form cations with a 2+ charge.
Ductile,Malleable
4.
GROUPS 3-12
Form colored compounds
Good conductors of heat and electricity
Can be bent into shape
less reactive than alkali metals such as sodium
have high melting points-but Mercury is a liquid at room temperature
5.
GROUPS 13-16
They have a poor reaction
Increase in atomic radius
Electrode potential increase
Ionization energy decreases
Only group that contain elements classified as metalloids
6.
GROUP 17
Nonmetals
Boiling points increase
Highly electronegative
Highly reactive
can be harmful or lethal to biological organisms in sufficient quantities
7.
GROUP 18
Odorless and colorless
Low chemical reactivity
Full valence shell
All conduct electricity
High solubility
8.
LANTHANIDES AND ACTINIDES
Bright silvery appearance
Magnetic
