ELF OWL DESCRIPTION

• The largest an elf owl will get is about 5 1/2 in.
• An elf owl has bright yellow eyes
• They are usually tawny and/or various tints of orange
• At birth a baby elf owl is no bigger than a man's thumbnail
• They are generally very vocal

ELF OWL HABITAT

• Elf owls live in cacti
• They live in deserts
• They live in places where there is water
• They live in places where there is lots of saguro cacti
• South western USA to central Mexico

ELF OWL ADAPTATIONS

• Like most owls Elf owls have great hearing
• Not unlike other kinds of owls Elfs have great night vision
• Elf owls eat invertabres such as moths,crickets,and scorpions
• Snakes,bobcats, and coyotes are predetors to elf owls
• Elfs have softened feathers on the leading edge of wings

ELF OWL FUN FACTS

• Elfs hunt at dusk & night
• Usually lay 2-4 eggs
• The young leave the nest for the first time at 27-28 days
• Early in breeding season the males call loudly to attract females & defend the nest
