ELIJAH MCCOY

  • Candian inventor and engineer
  • Notable for his 57 U.S. patents
  • Born: May 2nd, 1844
  • Died: October 10th, 1929

ENGINEER

  • Wasn't able to become engineer in U.S. due to racial barriers
  • McCoy invented a lubricating cup
  • Allowed trains to run for long periods of time without maintance break
  • Developed designs for ironing board, lawn sprinkler, and other machines

LIFE

  • McCoys were former slaves, escaped using underground railroad
  • In 1847, they returned back to U.S. settling in Michigan
  • Wasn't really recognized for his inventions
  • In 1920, formed Elijah McCoy manufacturing company

  • In 1922, was involved in fatal car crash
  • Sustained injuries he couldn't recover from
  • Died in Eloise Infirmary in Detroit, Michigan
  • Buried at Dtroit Memorial Park East
