THE HISTORY OF THE ICONIC ELIZABETHAN THEATRES

STRUCTURE

  • Large
  • 4 stories tall
  • All rooms faced balconies
  • Easy acess from street
  • Octagonal shape

THEATRE LAYOUT

  • Similar to coliseum
  • The pit-Stage projected halfway into where audience stood
  • The galleries-three levels with wooden benches,bigger ones towards the back,
  • No toilet facilities nor lighting or heating
  • Stage was 5 feet high,45 foot wide and 15 feet long

AUDIENCE

  • The public would pay 1 penny to stand in the pit
  • Gentry would pay to sit in galleries on cushions
  • Rich nobles would watch from a chair set on the side of the stage
  • One of only occasions rich and poor would come together
  • Queen Elizabeth was a frequent visitor

ACTORS

  • During the Elizabethan era only men could act
  • Young boys were hired for female roles
  • The make up used was highly poisonous
  • Clothing was of the highest quality
  • Acting style was dramatic

PLAYS

  • All were over exaggerated and dramatic
  • Many are still shown today
  • Most famous play writer is William shakespeare
