Marriage in Elizabethan times

Just as today a women's wedding is the most important says in her life. Well the major difference to Elizabethan wedding customs to a modern day Western marriage is that women had very little, if any, choice in who her husband might be. Elizabethan women were subservient to men.

Upper class: women's right

Elizabethan women were subversive to men. They dependent on their male relatives to support them. They were used to forge alliances with other powerful families through arranged marriages.

Lower class: women's rights

Elizabethan women from the lower class were also expected to obey the male member of their families without question. Lower class Elizabethan time women would not have attended school or received any formal type of education.
