Learning CeNters

  • places in a classroom where students can engage in hands-on activities
  • astudents can obtain additional experience in using new skills and expand skills usage to match more closely their individual needs
  • students work cooperatively with other students
Herrell and Jordan (2015) stated that well-planned centers are especially effective for English learners because they provide additional practice in newly developed skills and allow students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Multiple Intelligences

  • the ways people are smart-the modes in which they process information effectively
  • supports students' learning of new materials
  • provides multiple ways for students to demonstrate their understanding
  • bolsters students' confidence in their own abilities and reduces their anxiety
  • "Multiple Intelligences strategies are especially beneficial to English language learners since allowing them to learn and demonstrate their understanding in the mode in which they are most confident serves to lower the affective filter and boost their self-esteem and motivation" (Herrell, A. L. & Jordan, M., 2015, p.279).

May be used to teach Learning Centers and Multiple Intelligences Strategies

“Well-planned and appropriate use of technology in and out of the classroom can make a significant difference in how fast and how well ELLs learn academic as well as conversational English. Furthermore, activities involving technology can challenge ELLs by promoting critical thinking and enhancing executive functions such as analyzing, critiquing, and making judgments about competing ideas” (Sousa, 2011, p.218-219).

Learning Centers:
Four centers,
4 students per center
Multiple Intelligences vary per group

Utilizing ABCya website:
Media Center - Students play number recognition, number match games on Promethian Board (Monster Mansion Number Match)

“For elementary ELLs, for example, using technology to engage in actual activity may lead to improved language skills by increasing their vocabulary, their ability to share their own and their peers’ feelings, and hence feel accepted in their new environment” (Sousa, 2011, p.219).
