PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CALIFORNIA DROUGHT

Geography
California is in the southwestern part of the U.S. It is hot and very dessert like. Northern California depends on two big rivers as a water source, the San Joquin and the Sacramento rivers. Southern California's residents get 30% of their fresh water from ground water and 70% is imported from The Owens Vally and the Colorado River.

Water Crisis
The water crisis is a drought, A drought is a long period of time when an area gets no rain. It can cause areas of land to dry up and die.

Effects on Economy
Because of the drought about 17,000 people have lost their jobs and about 428,000 acres of farmland were left unplanted. They were left unplanted because of how little water they have and you can't really grow crops without water. Many ranchers also had to sell their livestock because they could not afford to feed them.

PROBLEMS IN EAST PORTERVILLE CALIFORNIA

  • Some family's like Denica's had no running or hot water.
  • Some family's had to go to a fire station to get water.
  • Some people had to go door to door and hand out bottled water.

Dear Governor Brown,
To help conserve water in California you can advise the citizens to take shorter showers and less baths, to use smaller pans for cooking so you don't waste the extra water, and if they drop an ice cube, put it in a plant instead of in the sink.
I hope you consider these options to the citizens. Thank you for reading this.

Making ocean water drinkable in California
Newsela article
________________
In California, people are making a building called The carlsload Besalination project. It turns salt water into fresh water and can clean 56 gallons a day.But it is very expensive and it takes up to much electricity. It also dumps back the non-fresh water back into the ocean but it is way saltier then before. So it is a good thing that it is cleaning but it is making the ocean water saltier.
