WHAT IS IT?

• Chronic condition
• Alveoli of the lungs are damaged
• The exchange of oxygen & carbon dioxide takes place in the alveoli

CAUSES

• Pollutants
• Dust from grains,cotton, wood, or coal
• MOST COMMON is smoking cigarettes & second hand smoke

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

• SOB that progresses over time
• Chronic cough
• Unintended weight loss
• Fatigue
• Characteristics of barrel chest in advanced cases

TREATMENT

• Stop smoking/ never start will help
• Bronchodilators, supplemental oxygen
• Inhaled steroids & respiratory therapy
• Lung transplant
• Surgery to remove damaged lung tissue
