The main reason for this animal's endangerment is habitat loss. ⋅This is because they make their homes on volcanic locations, and eruptions often destroy the homes.
They are also endangered by humans with our fishing nets. They get snared very easily in those left around.
Humans are, however, helping by setting up sites by dormant volcanoes to ensure their safety. These protected areas are already being filled by the birds.
This species is protected by the Ontario, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador Endangered Species Acts and the Wildlife Acts in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.
