ENDANGERED SEA TURTLES

BY:OLIVIA BRATTON

MEXICO

Human interactions are resulting in these exotic sea creatures becoming endangered and in need of our help.

Problems

  • FISHERIES
  • PLASTIC
  • POACHING
  • HABITAT DESTRUCTION

FISHERIES
~Approximately 40% of all sea turtles caught in fisheries are discarded as trash.
~ Trawls are also particularly destructive and are estimated to catch 20 pounds of bycatch for every pound of target species"
~ specific sea turtle populations such as the Pacific Leatherbacks are decreasing by 95%

POLLUTION
- less than 5% of plastics are recycled worldwide.
-Sea Turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, resulting in the sea turtles injesting the plastic and getting injurged.

POACHING
Poaching of sea turtles occurs for many reasons, such as for money and decor purposes. Also, many cultures believe that by eating sea turtle eggs, you will live a longer life.

HABITAT DESTRUCTION

  • Humans are constructing buildings on the coast.
  • Tourists are leaving trash on and destroying the beaches where sea turtles are nesting.

SOULTIONS

  • Make sure that all fisheries that accidentally catch turtles in their nets give them help ASAP.
  • Volunteer to help monitor nesting grounds
  • Contact the government or community about the problems relating to coastal development. Maybe the nesting grounds could become nature reserves!
