BY MICHELLE LAMORE

HOW MUCH ENERGY DO TYPICAL HOUSEHOLDS AND SCHOOLS USE?

  • A typical household in 2009 used 10 quadrillion BTU's.
  • A typical school uses 13% of commercial energy use.

HOW MUCH POLLUTION IS CAUSED BY U.S. ENERGY USE?

  • 90 quadrillion BTU's

WHY DO WE CONSUME SO MUcH ENERGY?

  • We consume so much energy because of all the things that use energy to power them.
  • Like commercial, industrial, residential, and transportation.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN THE U.S., HOW HAS IT GROWN, AND WHY?

  • Energy consumption has grown because we have so many things that rely on electricity or other fuel to run them.
  • In 1860 wood was used the most for heating and cooking.
  • In 1890 coal had replaced wood.
  • In 1930 over half of Americans lived in places were coal was burned and the rest used wood.
  • In 1984 Burlington electrical built a 50 megawatt wood burning plant.

WHY HASN'T IT BEEN REDUCED IN THE PAST?

  • It hasn't been reduced in the past because the population has grown and we need it for
  • Transportation, heating, cooking, making goods, and our electronic devices.
  • Also to be come developed country you need factories, farming machinery, and transportation.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS INVOLVED WITH REDUCING ENERGY?

  • It costs a lot of money because the energy saving technology is expensive.

HOW CAN YOU FIND OUT HOW MUCH ENERGY YOU USE? HOW CAN YOU REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY THAT YOU USE?

  • You can take the carbon footprint test to find out how much energy you use?
  • We can reduce the amount of energy we use by turning off stuff when we aren't using it to save electricity.
