NAZI CONSOLIDATION OF POWER

  • The Nazi's rise to power began a Dutch man set the German parliament on fire
  • Hitler quickly began to rise in power, getting most of Germany to vote for the nazis
  • After the nazis took control, Hitler outlawed all political parties, except for the nazis
  • Work unions were abolished and the leaders arrested
  • Hitler appoints himself Führer, making him leader of Germany

CONTROL OF GOVERNMENT

  • Hitler gets Military support in "The night of Long Knives"
  • The court swears loyalty to the Nazis
  • Public speeches given to strengthen the Nazi image in citizens
  • Hitler rules with iron fist, strict rules enforced
  • Jewish people begin to be discriminated against and blamed for poverty

CAMP MANAGEMENT

  • Gate of Aushwitz has phrase "Work Makes You Free"
  • More than 10,000 people died within the first 20 months
  • Josef Mengele, the "Angel Of Death" seperated who lived and who died
  • Very little food was given. When it was given, it was a small piece of bread
  • 800-1,000 people died every day, and the bodies burned

CAMP MANAGEMENT (CONT.)

  • "Crystalized prossic acid" was used to kill Jews in gas chambers
  • Nazis would do cruel experiments on Jews
  • Young and Old were seperated
  • Clothing comsisted of thin pants and Shirt, no socks or underwear
  • The most killing took place at Aushwitz, the largest concentration camp in Germany

THE MADAGASCAR PLAN

Before the concentration camps, The Nazis had the idea of sending the Jewish population to the island of Madagascar. This idea was later disregarded, as the leader of commission thought it would only be possible for 40,000 to 60,000 people to settle in Madagascar

RESISTANCE WITHIN CAMPS

  • Eventually, the Jews formed plans form an uprising in camps
  • On August 2nd, 1943, one of the camps was set on fire and half of the Jews escaped
  • The other half, however, were recaptured and killed
  • Many Jews fought as members of the military in Belgium, France, and Italy.
  • Jewish prisoners rose up against their guards in 3 death camps

THE WANNASEE CONFERENCE

  • In 1942, German officials met to discuss how they could kill off the Jews
  • Titled "The Final Solution" the Germans decided to bring the Jews together to kill them
  • The plan was to make the Jews work until most died of natural causes.
  • Once these people were dead, the Jews would be taken to gas chambers

GERMANY EFFICIENCY

  • Killing centers were designed for swiftly killing
  • Gas chambers were made to make killing less personal, as well as speed up killing
  • Between 1933 and 1945, the Nazis established about 20,000 concentration camps
  • These camps were used for forced labor, extermination, and holding
  • Foreign Jews were also held in the camps with all the other Jewish people
