PRESENTATION OUTLINE
England has a lot of things that add up to make their culture unique.
Food
-England is known for its bland cuisine.
-since 1950, they've eaten less red meat, more poultry and a normal amount of fish.
-most meals are based on beef, lamb, pork, chicken or fish served with potatoes and another vegetable.
-some of the main dishes have strange names like: bubble & squeak or toad-in-the-hole.
-Most common/typical foods are:
Sandwiches, fish and chips, pies, trifle, and roast dinners.
-Britain's staple foods are: meat, fish, flour, potatoes, butter, and eggs.
Eating times:
-Breakfast : between 7 and 9 am
-lunch : between 12 and 1:30 pm
-dinner : between 6:30 and 8 pm
Eating etiquette
-If you are a guest, wait until your host starts eating or indicates you to do so. This shows consideration.
-always chew and swallow all the food in your mouth before drinking or taking more.
-always say thank you when served.
-when eating rolls, break off a piece of bread before buttering, eating it whole is tacky.
Tea
-afternoon tea is the traditional 4 o'clock tea.
-it is a small meal.
- the tea (or coffee) is usually served with:
~freshly baked scones
~afternoon tea sandwiches (cucumber sandwiches with the crust cut off)
~assorted pastries
-it is not as common to have Afternoon tea anymore because people work.
-it is more common to have high tea (traditional 6 o'clock tea), which today is commonly called dinner or supper.
Leisure
People in Britain spend: 45% of their time watching television, 24% of their time socializing, 22-23% on sport and hobbies, and 10% on other activities.
-watching tv is the most common leisure activity.
-The average amount of TV watched per person each week is 25 hours.
-the average for listening to the radio is 15 hours and 20 minutes each week.
Weather
-the overall climate is called temperate maritime.
-This means that it's mild with temperatures not much lower than 0 degrees (c) In winter and not much higher than 32 degrees (c) in summer.
-it is also damp.
-July and August are England's warmest months.
-February is the coldest near the coasts and inland its between January and February.
-The best times to travel to England are: may, June, September and October.
-these months have the nicest temperatures and less rain.
Anthem
- the British national anthem is god save the queen.
- it was first performed in 1745.
-it is played whenever the queen makes a public appearance.
Royalty
-Buckingham palace is where the queen lives.
-it is the official London residence of Britain's Monarchy since 1837.
-queen Victoria was the first monarch to live in Buckingham palace.
-today it is the home to: the queen and Prince Philip.
-it is the London residence to: the duke of York (Prince Andrew) and the earl and countess of Wessex (Prince Edward and his wife and daughter).
The Flag
-England's flag is called the flag of England.
-the union flag is the flag for uk.
-it is commonly known as the Union Jack.
-it is made up of 3 of the countries flags in the uk that are all united under one sovereign: England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Taboo/behaviour
-how to greet someone: a bright hi, hello, or good morning.
-there are many different terms of endearment, like:
Dear, dearie, flower, love, chick, chuck, me duck, me Duckie, mate, guv, son, ma'am, madam, miss, sir, treacle...
-these terms depends on your age, sex, and location.
Superstitions
-there are many superstitions in Britain.
-it's lucky to meet a black cat.
-lucky to touch wood (knock on wood).
-lucky to find 4 leaf clover.
-white heather is lucky.
-a horseshoe over the door is lucky.
-catching falling leaves in autumn: each leaf that you catch means a lucky month next year.
-putting money in the pockets of new clothes is lucky.
-it is unlucky to walk under a ladder.
-it's 7 years bad luck to break a mirror.
-spilling salt is unlucky.
-it's unlucky to pass someone on the stairs.
-Friday the 13th is very unlucky because the number 13 is unlucky and Friday is unlucky because Jesus was crucified on a Friday.
Currency
-British currency is called the pound Stirling.
-the sign for the pound is £
-the pound is made up of 100 pence which is like the dollar being made up of 100 cents.
-there are coins and banknotes (same as our paper bills).
-coins: 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, 1 pound, 2 pounds.
-banknotes: 5 pound note, 10 pound note, 20 pound note, 50 pound note.
work
-75% of British shops are service industries like hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc..
-most people work 9-5pm
-earning less than £6.25 an hour in London puts you at or below the poverty level.
-can work legally at age 13.
