The poem 'island Man' is a poem about a Caribbean Island man who now lives in London he dreams about being back on the island and listening to those familiar sounds he had got so used to
Grace Nichols Grace was born in georgetown, Guyana in 1950. After working in Guyana as a teacher and journalist in the Caribbean she immigrated to the U.K. in 1977.
In the poem they use many poetic techniques such as alliteration: 'sun surfacing' She uses a effective ending by adding a tone and rhythm to it as it helps describe the dreamy words of Island man. The word 'surfacing' suggests the author has used it to show that the island man is trying to keep his dreams up for as long as possible
She uses imagery effectively 'wild sea birds and fisherman pulling out to sea' The effect that she creates is one that describes all the five senses. You can hear the birds screeching, smell the salt of the seas in the air, almost touch the sand against your fingers, taste fish and chips as your mouth waters and see the birds mid-flight above your head.
We have created an island which represents the island we paper mashed the card board, then outlined the island and painted. We also made tiny figures etc.trees, human and rocks
The poem contrasts two different atmospheres: the brightly coloured Caribbean, full of human and natural activity, and the dull, grey mechanical life in London.
The poem is dedicated to one individual but it reflects and speaks to any people who have made a major change in where they live, leaving behind the place where their roots lie.
The Caribbean is located within the tropics. The weather/climate is generally the same over the whole area, i.e., year round sunshine as well as looking like an paradise/dream world due to the beautiful scenery.
