WHY IS REVENGE NEVER SATISFYING?

Why is revenge never satisfying?

Revenges effect on emotions
The article, titled “Virtuous Vengeance” by Kristanna Scheiter, states that we have frequently sought revenge throughout the centuries, but the outcomes in the end are questionable. This source states the beliefs that Aristotle and other specialists had on the topic of revenge and how Scheiter feels about the lingering effects revenge has on its victims. Scheiter firmly believes that revenge should not be a solution to us at all; seeing as that it is an unquenchable emotion. The need for revenge hurts us in the long run, and no matter how much of it we get, it will never be enough for us.

Revenge and the scarlet letter
Revenge can be a temporary ‘solution’ to those who seek power. Research had been taken on students in the Adelaide University in Australia, where researchers discovered “People who are more vengeful tend to be those who are motivated by power, by authority, and by desire for status”(Price 1.) As the quote states, those who were more vengeful were motivated by power. Chillingworth too sought revenge on Hester and her lover, saying “Thou hast escaped me!” (Hawthorne 238) when Dimmesdale confessed his sins to the people. Chillingworth never stopped pestering Hester and Dimmesdale, determined to get his taste of vengeance.

Society’s problem with vengeance
According to DailyMail.com, “More than 50% of people would prefer to get their own backs sooner rather than later” (Ciaccia 1). Ciaccia also studies university students, seeing the harsh truth that people would rather ‘fix’ their situation than care about others. People today often think about themselves rather than others, and we sometimes forget the consequences of our actions. Even in “The Scarlet Letter”, Hester’s adulterous deeds caused her to go through a lot of trial and pain.

Revenge’s temporary satisfaction
Revenge never truly satisfies someone. Often times when we seek vengeance we feel like what we do is never enough, or isn’t good enough. As Chillingworth became more and more aware of Hester’s secret lover, (and her eventually telling him), he plots and looks forward to the day when she and her family become exposed and humiliated. What we want is never what we get in the long run, no matter how hard we try.

Conclusion
Hawthorne uses her novel to brilliantly explain the sadness of our sinful actions and emotions. It is very apparent that we do not always get what we want or get what satisfies us. Vengeance is always one sided and is used as a tool of manipulation and hurt. It will never help us in the long run, no matter how hard we try to make things ‘right’.
