Environmental Issues

Forest fires and wild fires are the same thing

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Forest Fires

BY:Ellie Spoerl

How long has forest fires been an issue?

Fire plays an important role in the life of a forest, clearing away dead wood and undergrowth to make way for younger trees. But for much of the last century, fire-suppression policies have sought to extinguish wildfires as quickly as possible to preserve timber and real estate. This approach has led to the accumulation of brush and other vegetation that is easily ignited and serves as fuel for wildfires.

What was the worst wildfire in US history?
The worst fires ever seen in the United States took place over 100 years ago. The deadliest, the 1871 Peshtigo Fire, claimed 2,500 lives while the largest was the Great Fire of 1910, burning three million acres of land.

AMOUNT OF FOREST FIRES

What’s the natural resource?

Trees are the main resource that is getting destroyed. Grass and other plants are getting destroyed as well

How can us humans help?

A centuries-old tradition, today the resurging practice is used to protect and refresh forests by removing the dense vegetation build-up in a forest’s understory that fuels large wildfires. This practice also allows for indigenous plants and wildlife to thrive, restoring a more natural and diverse ecosystem.

What viewpoint do I have for forest fires?
My viewpoint is conservation. I feel like we need to prevent forest fires as much as we can,it is very important for our generation. But, we we need to have more controlled fires.

Benefits

  • Gets rid of old vegetation so new vegetation can grow

COMBUSTION

  • Flaming combustion (when the tree is still on fire but is dead)
  • Glowing/smoldering combustion (when it’s done burning but still hot)
  • White ash lines of complete combustion

Why does forest fires conflict against air quality?

Forest fires create smoke which smoke has CO2 in it. It can create air pollution, if there is enough smoke.

SOLUTIONS/ALTERNATIVES

  • Extinguish burning cigarettes
  • Never leave a campfire unintended
  • Avoid burning in windy conditions

ORGANIZATIONS

  • Smokey the bear
  • Wild land firefighter foundation
  • IAWF
