Ephesians 4:25-32

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

and give no opportunity to the devil. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Put it Away

Speaking Lies  vs. 25
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

having put away

to take off a shirt

to set aside

to put where I am not

falsehood

word we get pseudo from

deliberately deceptive

untrue

Here is what that looks like

each one of us.....

speak the truth as opposed to that which is not true

if we can't say what is true to our neighbor

we are members of one another

reference to the body - the word members

tho those who live nearby and who we do life with

Keep Short Accounts

do not let the sun go down vs.  26-27
26 “

In your anger - as you get those 10-14 invitations a day to be

angry - word translated rage

do not sin: (as a matter of habit, keep on avoiding sinful reactions when invited to get angry....Command) step over the line

What does not stepping over the line look like?

resolve it quickly -

Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

literally as a present tense command - STOP letting the sun go down on your anger....

27 and do not give the devil

give the devil - adversary, who by very nature creates opportunities for people to become enemies

a foothold - a place to park

there is an adversarial spirit that dominates this church at every level of leadership.....

and has for years.....you not only have a spot for Satan to work, you have paved a whole parking lot......and seem to be added spaces every week....

Work with Your Hands

rob no more  vs. 28
Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

sandwiched in between two sections about how to treat others and handle emotions

but it is a reminder that anger and its fruits seldom lead to productive activity

it robs from others

So STOP stealing

Start directing that energy to a job....and work yourself to sleep....so tired you don't have the energy for anything else.....

working with your hands - the idea of producing something good, qualitatively so good that someone else could benefit from what you produce....

And take the fruits of your labors and do just the opposite of what you used to do.....give instead of take...

God begins to take that angry energy and redirect it to positive ends....

it is possible to do....

all

Untitled Slide

Stewers – waiting patiently for the chance to come dump hot stew on you while the ingredients of bitterness and unforgiveness slowly come to a boil

Exploders – “lose it” in your face

Snipers – those who sneak up on you take a few well aimed shots and fade back into the woods

Runners – simply avoid expressing their emotions, facing the truth, dealing with conflict , how are you…..fine….how did they do? Great!
