WHAT IS IT?

  • Neutrological condition which affects the nervous System.
  • Also known as a seizure disorder
  • Diagnosed when someone first has a seizure & doctors perform tests
  • The tests help doctors know what kind of epilepsy you have
  • Abnormal electrical activity in the brain

HOW COMMON IS IT

  • 4th most common neurological problem
  • 1 in 26 people will deveop it in their lifetime
  • 48 out of 100,000 people will develop it every year

HOW DOES A PERSON GET IT?

  • Brain injuries & chemical imbalances in brain
  • Age dependent
  • Cause is idiopathic or unknown
  • Mainly genetic- develops from gene abnormailties

WHAT IS GOING WRONG?

  • Disruption of electrical communication begween neurons
  • Some types are caused by mutated genes
  • Some types are caused by brain injury or disease

CAN WE TREAT IT?

  • Surgery to remove/ disconnect brain that allows seizures
  • Corpus callosotomies reduced seizure frequency & severity
  • Vagal nerve stimulation reduces seizures

AFFECT ON PATIENTS & FAMILIES

  • Families live with anxiety, helplessness or guilt
  • Randomness of seizures cause stress
  • Children withdraw from friends & social activities
  • Kids have low self-esteem
