NEW STATE CONSTITUTION
In 1850, Michigan made a new state constitution
Black votes were considered but not included
Allowed whites from other countries to vote, but they had to become a U.S. citizen
Male Native Americans could vote if they gave up their loyalty to their tribe
The issue of allowing black men to vote did go on the state ballot in 1850 but was defeated
