Rehabilitation Act of 1973


This Act guarantees the right for people with disabilities to participate in all school activities.

Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)


All costs associated with delivering the education outlined in the IEP must be provided free of charge.

Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)

Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)


Inclusion for students with special needs are to be organized so that supports are in place for the student to ensure safety and assistance while allowing maximum autonomy.

Individual Education Plan


An individual education plan details all the supports, including accommodations and modifications for a student with a disability. School team members and family need to review and sign it indicating they agree to and understand what will be done to ensure the student's academic success.

Accommodations


Accommodations are supports put into place to ensure that the barriers the student faces are minimized so that participation is maximized.

MODIFICATIONS


Modifications are the ways classroom activities are changed to render them more appropriate for the capabilities of the student with a disability.

INCLUSION


Inclusion is fully integrating a student into classroom lessons and activities according to his or her abilities.

Discipline & Due process


Students with an IEP are held to the same standards of good and appropriate behaviour as the other students but when considering discipline there is an extra level of consideration for the circumstances leading up to the infraction to ensure that the student's personal or learning challenges did not cause the incident.
