WHO IS MY EXPLORER

  • Eric the Red was Leif Erikkson's dad.
  • Leif was born 980 AD. And lived until until 1025.
  • Eric was banished to Greenland because he killed two men.
  • Leif never learned to read or write While growing up.
  • Eric made a settlement in Greenland and became chieftain of it.

WHAT DID MY EXPLORER DO

  • Leif was an ocean explorer and discovered Vinland, Markland and Hellualand.
  • He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Leif planned to start a colony when he was away but his father became ill.
  • He took over his father's land after he was ill.
  • He sailed back and forth from Vinland, Markland and Hellualand.

WHERE DID MY EXPLORER DO HIS EXPLORATIONS

  • Leif did his explorations in the Northern part of North America,Greenland and Iceland.
  • Leif sailed 1000 kilometres.
  • Once he found Vinland he settled there.
  • Vinland had animals, fresh grass and grapes.
  • Back then grapes could be made into wine and wine could be traded for money.

WHEN DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING

  • Leif began his explorations in 1002.
  • Eric, Leif and Eric's wife sailed to Greenland in 986.
  • In 1964 president Lyndon.B.Johnson made Leif Erikkson Day on October 9.
  • Leif sailed from Greenland to Markland to Hellualand.
  • By the 900s Greenland was running out of space.

WHY DID MY EXPLORER GO EXPLORING

  • Leif wanted to explore because Greenland was getting crowded.
  • He also wanted to go exploring because he was curious about different lands.
  • Leif also wanted to because he heard story's about an explorer named Bjarni Herjolfsson.
  • I think Leif wanted to explore because his dad Eric did and Bjarni did.
  • He heard Bjarni story's and wanted to be like Bjarni.

HOW DID MY EXPLORER EXPLORE

  • Leif did all his explorations on an open boat.
  • His boat had a thick woollen sail.
  • He had no navagational tools like maps or compasses.
  • He had a crew of 35 men
  • The way Leif found his way was by was the warmth of the water sea and sea animals.

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE AFTER HIS EXPLORATIONS?

  • If Leif didn't find land more places would be crowded.
  • Vinland is now Newfoundland.
  • Hellualand is now Baffin Island.
  • Markland is now Labrador.
  • Leif was nicknamed Leif the lucky.

REFLECTIVE COMMENT

  • I think Leif was a good man because he saved people on a sinking ship.
  • That's also why he was a brave man
  • I've never been to any of the places Leif discovered.
  • People think of Leif as a good man.
  • I liked researching Leif because he was a very interesting person.
