Reviews basic geography terms (e.g. city, region) demonstrates the difference between human-made and natural geographical features (e.g. lake vs. reservoir, river vs. canal), introduces "problem" concepts of obstruction and elevation, social concepts (goods, trade, transportation) to provide students with background knowledge for learning how geography influenced trade and development of the Erie Canal.
