WHO WAS LEIF ERIKSSON/ERIC THE RED?
Leif was born in 980 AD.
Erik The Red was the chieftain of Greenland and Leif's dad.
People nick named Leif "Leif the lucky" because everybody liked him and he was a good ruler.
Leif and Eric were Vikings.
Leif lived until he was about 45.
Eric had a daughter named Freydis.
Eric was also called Erik Thorvaldsen.
Some say Leif landed on Baffin Island.

WHAT DID ERIK THE RED/LEIF ERIKSSON DO?
As a boy Leif worked on the family farm.
Leif led a voyage to new land in the year 1000 or 1001.
Leif was the first European in North America.
Eric was banished from Iceland for 3 years because he killed two men in a fight over land.
Eric went to Greenland and lived with other people and soon Leif came to live there with him.

WHERE DID LEIF ERIKSSON /ERIC THE RED EXPLORE?
In about 999 Leif sailed to Iceland and Norway.
Leif and his dad did most of their explorations in North America.
Vinland (which is Newfoundland) had grapes growing on vines. It also had fish and grass, was warmer than other places and had a lot of animals to hunt and eat.
Eric's family settled in western Iceland.
Other explorers later explored Vinland.
Greenland was a very icy place.
Helluland was a big slab of rock with glaciers.
Leif lived in Vinland for one year.

WHEN DID LEIF ERIKSSON/ERIC THE RED EXPLORE
People don't know exactly when Leif Eriksson or Erik the Red explored, however, we do know that Leif began his explorations in 1002.
He sailed from Greenland to Helluland, Markland and Vinland.

WHY DID LEIF ERIKSSON/ERIC THE RED GO EXPLORING
Leif heard about about Markland, Helluland and Vinland out west from a explorer named Bjarni's Herjolfsson.
Eric was banished to Greenland because he had fought with enemies over land.
Leif left Greenland because it was crowded after living there for so long.
After hearing about the discoveries of Gunnbjorn Olfsson that lay west of Iceland, Eric set out to find them.

Leif had a crew of 35 men.
Leif's open boat was Bjarni's.
Leif's boat had a thick woolen sail.
The ships Eric sailed were open to weather.
Icelanders mostly ate meat and fish.
Leif navigated by looking at the stars.
