PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ERNEST RUTHERFORD

STATS

  • Nationality: British, Scottish, & New Zealander
  • Born: August 30th, 1871 in Brightwater, NZ
  • Died: October 19th. 1937 (66 yrs.) in Cambridge, Britain, UK
  • Research Focus: Nuclear Physics

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

COMMON THINGS HE ESTABLISHED

THE NUCLEUS

  • Shot Alpha Particles at a thin gold sheet
  • Some particles were deflected
  • Only deflected in center, negative charges would not deflect

SPLITTING THE ATOM

  • As a result of bombarding the nucleus with alpha particles
  • Protons are forced from the nucleus by the particles

RUTHERFORD MODEL

  • Falsified the Plum Pudding model
  • Shows that electrons orbit a central nucleus

RUTHERFORD (UNIT) [rd]

  • Unit of radioactivity
  • The Activity of a Quantity of Radioactive Material
  • In which one million nuclei decay per second
  • Equivelent to one megabecqurel
