ERNEST RUTHERFORD

BIOGRAPHY

  • Was born on August 30, 1871 in New Zealand.
  • He attended the University of New Zealand and Canterbury College.
  • He graduate in 1893 with a degree in Mathamatics and Physical Science.
  • He past away on October 19, 1937 in Cambridge.

CONTRIBUTION TO ATOMIC THEORY

  • Discovered a simpler and easier way of detecting radio waves in 1895
  • Collaborated with J.J. Thompson on a study of x-rays effects on gases.
  • In 1903 he categorized radioactive elements into a "decay series."
  • In 1903 he credited the discovery of Radon
  • In 1907 made the discovery that most of an atom's mass is concentrated in the nucleus, gave birth the the nuclear model, and paved the invention of the atom bomb
