WHO WAS SHACKLETON?
He was born on February 18, 1874 in Ireland.
Moved to London, England when he was 10.
His father was Henry Shackleton and his mother was Henrietta Letitia Sophia Gavan.
For school, he went to Dulwich College.
He was interested in adventure, but particularly interested in exploring the South Pole.
Shackleton had three children.
He married a woman named Emily.
He died of a heart attack in 1922.

WHAT DID SHACKLETON DO?
In 1890, he left London to become a sailor.
Shackleton led a few British expeditions to the Antarctic.
Amazingly, no one died on his travels.
On his third trip, his ship became ice-locked and his crew abandoned the ship and had to board small boats to Elephant Island.
He lived on a life boat for months and spent two years trying to get rescued.
He tried to go to Antarctica for the last time in 1921-1922 and this is when he died.

WHERE DID SHACKLETON EXPLORE?
On his 2nd trip to the Antarctic, he made it to within 97 miles of the South Pole before he had to return home.
Everyone on his ship was stranded.
He did all of his expeditions in the polar region of the South Pole and in Antarctica.
He planned to cross Antarctica from the Wedell Sea to McMardo Sound.
He drifted at sea for 10 months.
He and 5 men took a life boat to South Georgia.
He embarked on all of his expeditions on ships.

WHEN DID SHACKLETON DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?
He did four explorations to reach the South Pole, in 1901-1903, 1907-1909, 1914-1917, and finally 1921-1922 when he died.
His ship was destroyed in 1915 on his third expedition.
During this expedition, Shackleton and his men were on ice for 2 YEARS, before they were rescued.
His first trip was when he was 25.
He returned to England in 1916.

WHY DID SHACKLETON EXPLORE?
He always wanted to be the first to reach the South Pole.
He made a goal of passing through the the South Pole via Antarctica.
In 1900, he volunteered in a expedition to reach the South Pole.
In 1911, anotherNorwegian explorer reached the South Pole before him.

WHAT TOOLS DID SHACKLETON USE?
His ships were named the Discovery, the Nimrod, the Endurance, and the Quest.
They needed warm clothes, food, water, and navigation devices.
He was very knowledgeable and an excellent leader

HOW DID SHACKLETON'S EXPLORATION IMPACT THE WORLD?
He's always remembered for his exploration of a largely unknown continent without any modern travel or radio communication.
He was considered an excellent and respected leader.
He had the ability to recruit the right people for his expeditions.
His life was a inspiring story of how being positive can help you survive.
He was forgotten, but his story was rediscovered in the 20th century.
