CHILDHOOD

  • Esperanza as a child of seven in 1924
  • Living a very rich life surrounded by many
  • Living on a Ranch

HARVEST AND BIRTHDAY

  • Six years later, Esperanza is allowed to cut the first bunch of grapes to begin the harvest.
  • Harvest is Esperanza’s favorite time of year as her birthday also falls on the same season.

TRAGEDIES

  • Papa and his friends were captured and killed while they were in the fields by the bandits
  • Tio Luis Papa's mean brother forces Esperanza's mama to marry him, but mama refused
  • Tio Luis was infuriated and he burnt down the ranch

ESACAPE TO CALIFORNIA

  • She and her mother had no place to stay
  • They learnt that Tio Luis would not leave them alone, so decided to migrate to California
  • With a lot of struggles they arrived in California

HARD LABOR AND SICKNESS

  • Esperanza ends up in a new home, where she scared to live and was uncomfortable with small space and working situation
  • Her mama had to work hard in the farm, where she had to endure a dust storm one day
  • After a month, mama got very sick and ended up in a hospital

SHOULDERING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mama's sickness was a major turning point is a moment in Esperanza's life. She learned to live her new life without Papa; now she might even have to live without Mama too
  • Esperanza decided to work with the women in order to make money to pay Mama's bills and get Abuelita, her grandma, to California. Esperanza begins cutting potato eyes.
  • Esperanza saved some money through her hard work and staying away from the strike
  • Her mother at last got better and returned to home.

GETTING IN FIGHT

  • Esperanza had a fight with Miguel, in which she called him a peasant.
  • Miguel left for north to find a job, but Esperanza thought that it was because she was mean to him, he left. He even took with him the money, which she saved to bring Abuelita from Mexico
  • Ramona, her mother consoles her when she said that Miguel left them because she was mean to him.

HAPPY FAMILY REUNION

  • Miguel returned with a surprise
  • He brought with him, Abuelita to California. Esperanza's family reunited.
  • Recovering Ramona was excited to her mother in California .
  • A few days before her birthday Esperanza and Miguel went to the foothills where they laid on the ground to hear the earth’'s heartbeat

BIRTHDAY AND THE LESSON

  • On Esperanza’s birthday, the men sang to her from outside.
  • She thought of how grateful she should be for what she had, even though that birthday was much different than her other birthdays
  • Esperanza and Miguel listened to the earth and celebrated her birthday a full year after the tragedy of her father’s death.
  • Esperanza had learned how to be rich in being poor.
