THE HOBBIT

BY J. R.R. TOLKEIN, PRESENTATION BY, ANDREW WHITE

What is the value of adventure?

My essential question is, “What is the value of adventure?” I composed this essential question by reading “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkein.

THE NOVEL

In the novel “The Hobbit”, Bilbo Bagains, the main character, set out on a journey not only to help the dwarves but to better understand nature and himself. On the journey Bilbo is bestowed with many challenges which take wit and wisdom. Many challenge his skill both physically and mentally. By the end of the long back breaking journey, Bilbo had grown in many ways and has had a whole new experience in the outside world.
Bilbo later becomes obsessed with adventure and never really settles down in his home ever again. He also studies the forests and the animals in them, and writes a journal about them, this shows how adventure opened up his spectrum to new ideas of exploration and education.

THE SOURCE

In the article, “VALUES IN ADVENTURE EDUCATION” the author, Pete Allison, talks about his views of adventure and how the outside influences of nature help his views on life. He expands on the concept of education about the world and about himself and the God who made everything. He uses these points to help the reader further understand why people adventure and how it helps them mentally and physically. He expands on a point that focuses on how the complex world God made has not been fully explored and there is so much more we need to learn. The main point of this article is that Allison points to the value of adventure being education and experiencing the world God made.
