PRESENTATION OUTLINE
WHAT IS ETHANOL FROM ALGAE?
- A clean burning, high octane, renewable fuel
- A biofuel
- It is a renewable resource
How does it form?
Ethanol can form many different ways. But this one way is from algae. You grow the algae and then take the leaves and stem, and that is what you use to get the ethanol.
Who originally found ethanol from algae? Harder and Von witsch where the first to propose that micro algae could be grown for fuel.
How is this used as energy?
The algae is turned into ethanol. The ethanol is then used as a biofuel and has been used successfully in biodiesel cars.
How do we use this today?
There has not been a lot of use of this biofuel yet but it is out for commercial sale.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
- Absorbs CO2 as it grows
- Can be grown on unusable land
- Lower carbon footprint
- Doesn't need clean water
- More energy per unit compaired to other biofuels
WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS?
- Uses up a lot of land
- Needs fertilizer to grow faster
- Have to use a lot of water
- Costs lots of money
- Needs a controlled temperature
How long will this last?
Since this is a renewable resource this will last for a long time but it is not yet said how long this energy will be around to use.
QUIZ: DO IN NOTABILITY
- Who where the first people to discover this energy?
- What are some things algae need to grow?
- Algae is a renewable resource: T or F
- Why type of fuel is ethanol from algae: fossil or bio
- What can algae absorb while it is growing?
