Ethanol From Algae

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ETHANOL FROM ALGAE

By Meredith Kleve & Emily Ingemann; Core 2

WHAT IS IT?

  • Form of ethanol
  • A renewable resource
  • Also know as a biofuel
  • Carbon based fuel
  • Relies on carbon-cycle

HOW IS IT FORMED?

  • Take sugar formed by algae
  • Mix sugar with yeast
  • Let fermentation occur
  • Separate ethanol from fermentation solution

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • First research done in 1970s by the Aquatic Species
  • 2000 first commercial program began
  • Successfully tested

PEOPLES REACTION

  • Constituents see lots of risks
  • Favor the technology used in science
  • Like to see advances

HOW IS IT USED?

  • Sugar used for fuel
  • Made into Ethanol
  • Fuels cars, boats, aircraft

CURRENT USES

  • Ethanol is blended with fossil fuels
  • Labs to find mass manufacturing stratigies

BENEFITS

  • Doesn't take up much land to grow
  • 93% less greenhouse gases released than fossil fuels
  • Relatively fast to make
  • Not competing w/ food sources

NEGATIVES

  • Requires phosphorus which is scarce
  • High upfront costs
  • Ethanol isn't as powerful as fossil fuels

FUTURE SUPPLY

  • In 2 decades whole cities could be powered
  • Billions of gallons by 2022
  • By 2050 make up 27% of fuel
  • 2000-5000 gallons per acre
