WHAT IS ETHANOL FROM CORN?

A colorless, flammable liquid made with corn
It is mixed with gasoline to reduce air pollution
It's also used to power cars and other internal combustion engines
People have many different opinions on corn ethanol

BACKGROUND: ITS ORIGINS AND VIEWPOINTS

There are ethanol plants in 27 states
Some people support corn ethanol because:
Corn ethanol helps reduce air pollution and it's renewable
Some people dislike corn ethanol because:
It takes more energy to make corn ethanol than it produces

ENERGY: HOW IS IT PRODUCED?

The two ways to produce corn ethanol: wet and dry milling process
The dry milling process is when:
The entire corn kernel is ground into flour and referred to as meal.
The wet milling process is when:
The corn grain is combined with sulfuric acid and water

CURRENT USE OF CORN ETHANOL

Its mainly used in gasoline to produce a low level blend
Its used as a renewable fule
It powers up vehicles when when blended with gasoline

BENEFITS

Corn ethanol reduces gas prices

The oil import dependance has dropped
It reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Spills containing ethanol tend to be bigger
