Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix

Known as Eugène Delacroix. Born on April 26, 1798 in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, France. Died at age 65.

Fame due to

  • The fact he was known as a prominent and controversial French painter
  • Rejected neoclassic manners and developed a freer, more romantic style with emphasis on color
  • Portrayed subjects filled with extreme emotion, dramatic conflicts, and violence

Delacroix was part of the Romantic art period. This period consisted of paintings, music, and literature. Art was inspired by nature, exotic places, and landscapes. Other common themes included imagination & freedom, feelings & emotions, Ancient Greek & Roman art/mythology, and folklore.
