WHEN AND WHERE DID THIS EVENT TAKE PLACE?

  • The 3rd of December 1854. Government troopers raided the miners at the Eureka mines in Ballarat.

WHAT EFFECT DID THIS HAVE ON AUSTRALIA

  • It gave people the right to vote
  • It gave people freedom to speak

EUREKA TIMELINE

  • 29th November,1854. A huge meeting was held on Bakery Hill attended by more than 10,000 diggers. A number of diggers burnt their Licences. 30th November, 1854 A Licence hunt occurred in the morning at the order of Commissioner Rede. The diggers refused to show their Licences.

EUREKA TIMELINE PART 2

  • The miners threw rocks at the troopers as they entered the diggings. Approximately six diggers were arrested and taken to the Government. In the afternoon, work was suspended on the Eureka Lead.

EUREKA TIMELINE PART 3

  • 1st December, 1854 Major General Sir Robert Nickle left Melbourne for Ballarat with 800 men. Raffaello Carboni, George Black and Father Smyth met with Commissioner Rede to present a peace proposal. Rede rejected the request.

EUREKA TIMELINE PART 4

  • 3rd December, 1854 At dawn the Stockade was attacked and a brief battle followed. Twenty one diggers and seven military officers were officially listed as dead. Many others were wounded. Approximately 120 diggers were arrested and marched to the Government Camp.
