BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • It was also called the Congo conference.
  • It regulated European colonization and trade in Africa.
  • Otto von Bismarck, first chancellor of Germany organized and called for it.
  • This marked a point of increased colonial activity on the European side.

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • The Europeans wanted to use Africa for getting cotton, copper , iron , and rubber.
  • They wanted to expand because they needed a new market for manufactured goods.
  • Europeans could control African waterways such a s the suez canal.
  • There was a push for the European culture to be spread.

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • The maxim gun was used.
  • They used steamships to get around.
  • leaders already ruling were spoken through by European rulers.
  • The tonic helped with symptoms of malaria.

END OF COLONIALISM

  • Colonial powers withdrew from Africa after WWII.
  • Many people went on hunger strikes in protest.
  • India lead the African countries in the revolution by example.
  • Gandhi was an important peaceful protester of colonialism.
  • Many people were relocated and their independence was a bloody one.

LASTING EFFECTS

  • French and English speaking people's have difficulty making decisions.
  • Racial oppression is also an effect.
  • Widespread poverty has resulted.
  • The Africans are still recovering from slave trading.
