  • Passive euthanasia
  • Voluntary euthanasia
  • Involuntary euthanasia

EUTHANASIA TIMELINE

  • 400BC: The "Hippocratic Oath" was written
  • circa 1800: "First do no harm."- Thomas Inman
  • 1828: New York outlaws euthanasia
  • 1920: "Permitting The Destruction Of Life Not Worthy Of Life" written
  • 1998: Dr. Jack Kevorkian performs euthanasia on live televison

"THE DOCTOR OF DEATH"

  • Aired the death of Thomas Youk on "60 Minutes" in 1998
  • Tried for second degree murder, sentenced to 10-25 years
  • Helped at least 130 people kill themselves during the 1990's (Lowes)

ALTERNATIVES?

  • Pain management
  • Forgoing of life-sustaining treatment (Otolaryngol)

PRO/CON
Pain management: costly, no insurance.
Life treatment: no pain, although possible loopholes. Passive euthanasia?

  • Define difference between murder and euthanasia
