Event Massage

Practice Day

Remember...

  • Bring snacks
  • Bring layers of clothing (including waterproof if potential for rain exists)
  • Set table slightly lower than for Swedish
  • Bring business cards
  • Have fun!

Pre-Event

Review

-Administered before an athletic activity
-Used as an adjunct to an athlete’s normal warm-up routine (not a replacement)
-Should enhance; not disrupt

Timing: Up to two hours prior to event
Pace: Generally fast
Focus: Main muscles to be used during their athletic activity

Pre-Event Interview

  • When is your event?
  • Have you completed your warm-up routine? Any difficulties with stretching?
  • What areas would you like focus on?
  • What are you feeling in those areas? Areas of tension?
  • Any other areas of tension?
  • Any history of injuries?

Goals for Session

  • Increase circulation to tissues
  • Warm up tissues
  • Free fascial structures
  • Lubricate joints
  • Enhance mental readiness for event

Procedure

  • Compressions
  • Petrissage
  • Circular frictions
  • Mobilizations/light stretching
  • Jostling
  • Palmar friction
  • Tapotement
  • Superficial MFR (broadening)

After Session

  • Thank them
  • Wish them well
  • Let them know you're available after their event if they want to come back

Inter-Event

Review

Timing: Between events, less than 15 minutes
Pace: Similar to pre-event
Focus: More specific than pre-event

Goals for Session

  • More specific release for areas of tension
  • Improving lymph uptake
  • Facilitate rate of recovery
  • Maintain invigoration

Procedure

  • Compressions
  • Petrissage
  • Circular frictions
  • Mobilizations/stretching (CRAC)
  • Jostling
  • Palmar friction
  • Tapotement (not if cramping)
  • Superficial MFR (broadening)

After Session

  • Thank them
  • Wish them well
  • Let them know you're available after their event if they want to come back

Post-Event

Review

Administered at the end of the athletic activity. Usually around 10-20 minutes in duration

Pace: Slower than pre-event
Focus: Depending on athletic activity

Post-Event Interview

  • How are you feeling? Hot, warm, cold?
  • Are you wearing dry clothes?
  • Any problems during your event?
  • What areas would you like focus on?
  • What are you feeling in those areas?
  • Have you completed your cool down stretches?
  • Did you had enough water?

Goals for Session

  • Increase venous and lymphatic circulation
  • Reduce muscle spasms/decrease tight muscles/Relieve cramping
  • Provide general relief from exhaustion
  • Reduce post competition stress
  • If need be, refer for proper medical attention

Procedure

  • Compressions/Rocking/Jostling
  • Petrissage
  • Frictions
  • Mobilizations/stretching/Pin & stretch
  • Jostling
  • Effleurage
  • Myofascial Release
  • Cramp management protocol if needed
  • CRAC/PIR

CRAC

  • Engage muscle with direct pressure (will be doing linear friction)
  • Have client gently contract muscle
  • Slide along muscle fibers while they contract for 2-5 seconds and release (may do this contraction several times)
  • Have client contract antagonist at the end of the stroke

PIR

  • Stretch the muscle, back off slightly
  • Have client contract muscle gently, hold for 8 seconds
  • Release, then slightly stretch further, repeat 8 second contraction
  • Repeat steps 2-3, up to 3 times

After Session

  • Thank them
  • Wish them well
  • Give them your card and let them know how to make an appt. if they're still sore in the next week
