A TOXIN ADAPTATION

  • Skunks will spray predators when threatened, predators will remember the distinct black and white pattern and will stay away

A MIMICRY ADAPTATION

  • On left: Viceroy, On right: Monarch
  • The Viceroy disguises as the bitter tasting Monarch
  • Found in Mexico and the United States

A CAMOUFLAGE ADAPTION

  • Uroplatus Gecko- blends in to look like a tree trunk to hide from predators
  • Found in Madagascar

STABALIZING SELECTION

  • Birds laying eggs- laying less eggs is unfavorable; that trait declines

DISRUPTIVE SELECTION

  • In an evironment of black and white rocks- black and white: survive, grey; eaten by predators
  • Grey population diminishes

DIRECTIONAL SELECTION

  • Short and medium-necked giraffes died: could not reach leaves on trees; long-necked prospered: able to reach leaves

SEXUAL SELECTION

  • Big Horn Rams: females are going to pick the males who are the strongest and have the biggest horns

DIVERGENT EVOLUTION

  • Pentadactyl limb- homologous structure in many like the human arm, fin of whale, and wing of bird

CONVERGENT EVOLUTION

  • Old World and New World Vultures: Both eat carrion, search for food by soaring and have unfeathered heads, but they are from different families

COEVOLUTION

  • Flowers compete against each other for pollinators
