EXAMPLES OF PATHOS

BY: JACOB NESBIT

PERSUASIVE ESSAYS

  • Pathos is commonly used in persuasive essays.
  • The speaker uses pathos, or the emotional appeal to draw their audience in or persuade them.

EXAMPLE #1

  • " it shouldn't matter the gender of a human being, because in the end we are all the same and should all be treated as donuts."
  • By attacking the audience emotional appeal it pulls the audience in, to learn about women's rights.

EXAMPLE #2

  • "Women are killed everyday due to domestic violence"
  • By telling the audience about how women die everyday, it pulls them in emotionally. Drawing them into the subject and making them want to learn more.

EXAMPLE #3

  • "7 out of 10 women in the Middle East will find themselves forced into an abusive relationship."
  • Though this sentence is logos, there is pathos as well. By stating that multiple women will be forced into an abusive relationship, we are putting the audience into a vulnerable state to be emotionally victimized.
