EXPANSION & IMPERIALISM

IMPERIALISM

  • Stronger nations take over territories
  • Expanding economic, political, and military to have control.

WILLIAM SEWARD

  • Secretary of State, under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.
  • He was responsible for the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

YELLOW JOURNALISM

  • Sensational style of writing
  • Exaggeration in the news feed about Spanish cruelty
  • This increased readership.

U.S.S. MAINE

  • McKinley sends out a battleship to protect Americans from the Spanish.
  • The ship exploded which many Americans were in favor of the war against Spain.

SPANISH AMERICAN WAR

  • During the time April 20, 1898 - August 12,1898
  • McKinley signed a congressional resolution.
  • This required Cuba's independence and summoned a withdrawal of Spanish forces.

ROUGH RIDERS

  • Theodore Roosevelt led a volunteer cavalry.
  • They were sent out to help take San Juan and Santiago.
  • Which took the Spanish fleet.

PLATT AMENDMENT

  • This amendment was added to the Cuban constitution.
  • This amendment stated that America could interfere in government.
  • Also set up a naval base at Guantanamo Bay.

ANTI-IMPERIALIST LEAGUE

  • Jane Addams-reformer, Andrew Carnegie-a business man, Mark Twain-writer, joined the league.
  • Americans did not give true independence to Spain's former colonies.
  • They protested but no one listened because Americans were celebrating the victory.

SPHERES OF INFLUENCE

  • Japan and the major European powers expand into China.
  • They have control over the country.
  • Their was a great influence on economic or government purposes.

OPEN DOOR POLICY

  • Proposed by John Hay, Secretary of State.
  • All nations in China would be allowed to trade in China.
  • No other country could have a monopoly in China,
  • This policy was accepted.

BOXER REBELLION

  • Rebellion of Chinese people, angered by the other countries' cultural superiority attitude.
  • This was put down by an international force.

PANAMA CARAL

  • A shortcut that connects to Atlantic and Pacific.
  • This controls the land And helps take over.
  • Cuba had control of this. Benefiting t use the canal.
  • This would made a huge human cost.

ROOSEVELT COROLLARY

  • Another policy from Roosevelt, to prevent European intervention in Latin America.
  • Also for policemen to act in their region.

REASONS FOR AMERICAN EXPANSION

  • Economic interest
  • Military interest
  • Belief in cultural superiority

THE WAY AMERICANS FELT ABOUT EXPANSION & IMPERIALISM

  • They approved of expansion and imperialism because it brought in opportunities.
  • Such as economic, military, and cultural superiority interest.
  • This develops bigger territories.

AMERICAN INVOLVEMENT IN CHINA

CAUSE & EFFECT OF SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR

  • President McKinley sent out a battleship called U.S.S. Maine.
  • The ship was sent out to protect the Americans from the Spanish.
  • While the ship was sailing it exploded, many say from the own boat itself.
  • Many Americans blamed Spain.
  • President McKinley signed a congressional resolution for Cuba's independence.

AMERICAN INVOLVEMENT IN CHINA

  • Americans were given access to trade through Japan.
  • Opened by Commodore Perry which European and Japan expanded powers.
  • John Hay wanted a monopoly so that no single countries can trade with China.
  • Chinese created a boxer, which led an up spring and brought down by international force.

PANAMA CANAL

  • U.S builds a shortcut that connect to the Pacific & Atlantic
  • This saves times and also helps the economic.
  • After the U.S. builds the connection, they sell it to Cuba.
