Provide experiences that are inquiry based.

Incorporate the use of technology to research.
Expeditionary learning provides students with student-centered activities, where students are encouraged to work together to create, investigate, and solve problems. Often, students are given the opportunity to create hypotheses and develop plans on how to solve real world community problems.

Uses technology resources to solve problems.

Gives students relevant opportunities to experiment, gain leadership skills, and "learn by doing."

Through my undergraduate educational process as well as the research I have conducted, I have often been informed that students learn more effectively through hands-on experiences and practices, which is what expeditionary learning is all about.

Educators are trained to teach diverse learners.

Encourages students AND teachers to reach full

potential by providing challenging educational experiences.
I appreciate that this EL has best interests in mind of both the student as well as the teacher.

Encourages critical thinking and hands on learning experiences in places outside of the classroom.

Brings specialists into the classroom

Expeditionary learning encourages the bringing in of experts of particular topics being studied for rich, authentic learning experiences.

Incorporates service learning

This learning approach includes relevant community service experiences to strengthen students' learning, to teach responsibility for their communities, and to encourage team work.

Students take pride in their work and it is often showcased or presented.

It works!

According to elschools.org, "[Expeditionary learning] schools consistently outperform their peers on student achievement measures and we are committed to collecting third-party research on the impact of our work. " These findings were observed after comparing five EL schools from New York and Washington, D.C. to other schools "with similar demographic characteristics and baseline achievement in the two years before students entered EL schools."

According to elschools.org, "Schools in the Expeditionary Learning network that implement our model with fidelity exceed their peers on standardized assessments." Evidence of success is also located on their website.
