Giovanni Caboto

  • born in Italy but sailed under Henry VII
  • sailed to Canada in 1497
  • on June 24th he landed in Newfoundland
  • he was searching for the Northwest passage
  • found an abundance of cod fish

2nd times a charm

  • Cabot set out again in 1498 
  • He never returned to Europe

Amerigo Vespucci

  • Sailed for Spain 1499-1500; Sailed for Portugal 1501-1502
  • first person to realize that the Americas were not attached to Asia
  • America was named for him in 1507 
  • Discovered the mouth of the Amazon in South America
  • 2nd expedition he mapped out the eastern coast of SA

Martin Frobisher

  • A British privateer (aka- pirate)
  • Also searching for Northwest Passage
  • Thought he found gold on Baffin Island
  • Frobisher Bay named after him
  • Lost some of his men to the Inuit people and took one captive

Jaques Cartier

  • French explorer who led three expeditions in 1534, 1535, and 1541
  • Looking for a route to the Pacific through North America
  • Sailed inland going 1,000 miles up the St. Lawrence
  • Cartier named Canada: "Kanata" which means village in Huron
  • Cartier kidnapped Chief Donnacona's sons
