- on June 24th he landed in Newfoundland
- he was searching for the Northwest passage
- found an abundance of cod fish

- Sailed for Spain 1499-1500; Sailed for Portugal 1501-1502
- first person to realize that the Americas were not attached to Asia
- America was named for him in 1507
- Discovered the mouth of the Amazon in South America
- 2nd expedition he mapped out the eastern coast of SA

- French explorer who led three expeditions in 1534, 1535, and 1541
- Looking for a route to the Pacific through North America
- Sailed inland going 1,000 miles up the St. Lawrence
- Cartier named Canada: "Kanata" which means village in Huron
- Cartier kidnapped Chief Donnacona's sons
